On November 16, 2023, the three-day 2023 German Intelligent Automation and Components Exhibition (referred to as "Nuremberg SPS Exhibition"), as the top event in the field of global industrial automation systems and components, ended perfectly at the Nuremberg International Exhibition Center in Germany. At the exhibition, the list of winners of the 2023 AutomationsBest Award was announced. The award was jointly awarded by the technical magazine "messtec drives Automation" and the online portal WileyIndustryNews.com. Leuze's innovative products were well received by users and professional readers, and the new compact positioning system AMS 100i won the second place in the "Best Product" category.

During the exhibition, the product features and excellent performance of AMS 100i were demonstrated at the Leuze booth. With its tiny size of 105 x 68 x 75 mm, the new AMS 100i is the perfect solution for small spaces. Its minimum blind area is only 100 mm, which allows positioning applications to reach the sensor layer directly and the available space to be used effectively. The sensor works with very high precision: by using AMS 100i, users can locate with millimeter accuracy up to 120 meters. Users can choose to integrate equipment and window heating, so it can be used at low temperatures as low as minus 30°C (no need to heat to minus 5°C). In high temperature environmental conditions, the design of AMS 100i can also withstand temperatures of 60°C above zero. The product won high recognition from the judges with its excellent technical performance and innovative solutions.

Stacker crane positioning tasks
In high-bay warehouses with aisles up to 120 m long, the use of stacker cranes to store and retrieve cargo (boxes, cartons and pallets) requires automated control using sensor and actuator systems instead of mechanical distance sensors that are prone to wear or contour errors. The position of the stacker crane can be determined optically to identify the distance between the transport vehicle and the end of the aisle. The new AMS 100i can reliably handle positioning tasks over a large range of 120 m and is compatible with traverse speeds of up to 10 m/s and an accuracy of ± 2 mm. In addition, unlike mechanical systems, the device does not produce mechanical wear.
High forklift/load container lifting position in the aisle
In lift positioning applications for forklifts in aisles, compact optical systems are required to replace mechanical distance sensors that are prone to wear. The sensor unit must be optimally integrated and mechanically mounted flexibly in a variety of different positions depending on the type of transport vehicle. The new AMS 100i optical system is not subject to mechanical wear. The new AMS 100i product measures only 105 mm x 68 mm x 75 mm and reduces the blind area to 100 mm. Thanks to its modular mounting concept, the AMS 100i also offers great flexibility in installation.
